Men urged to undergo vasectomy for family’s sake

A population advocacy group on Wednesday urged men to participate in reproductive health campaigns through vasectomy, which it said could help build a “first-class family." Benjamin De Leon, president of the non-government, The Forum for Family Planning and Development, Inc., said men should not be afraid to undergo vasectomy which helps promote reproductive health and family planning. “Fear holds us back from doing things and decisions that are best for our family. Men should have no fear to undergo vasectomy when the desired number of children is already achieved. It is proven to be simple and safe. (The procedure) is highly effective with very low risk and the complications are rare," he said. De Leon said vasectomy won’t affect men’s sexual drive. “It’s a myth. Studies have proven (that it won’t). I’ve known some friends (who) underwent the procedure, it did not prevent them from having the ability to have or enjoy sex." He said that after a few days of rest, men who underwent the procedure can go back to their routine. “Avoiding strenuous activities or heavy lifting would usually be only for a week, at the most, and everything is back to normal thereafter." He said a cost-effective procedure called non-scalpel vasectomy can be done in a clinic within eight to 15 minutes without incisions. De Leon said vasectomy is not similar to castration because in the latter, men won’t be able to experience erection and would become impotent. - GMANews.TV
