Babies from displaced 'Vietnam' families getting sick

The demolition of the "Vietnam Village" area in Manila's Quiapo district last weekend is taking its toll on the health of displaced families, especially the babies. Radio dzBB reported that as of Monday morning, at least six infants were in need of medical attention and were suffering from diarrhea. It did not immediately name the infants but described them as between one to one-and-a-half years old. Families displaced by last Friday's demolition also asked anew Manila mayor Alfredo Lim to speed up their relocation. Lim had promised to relocate them during last Friday's demolition. Lim led the demolition of houses in the "Little Vietnam" village area following reports of drug-related deals and killings there. Last month, the bodies of two murdered women were discovered stuffed into a plastic drum and placed under one of the houses in the village, about to be dropped into the nearby canal. Since the demolition, families had been staying in makeshift tents. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard has started diving for other victims in the area, but could not get far because of the murky and dirty water. Lim said last Friday that some 50 victims may have been dumped into the canal. - GMANews.TV
