Boat capsizes off Nonoc Island; 1 dead, 1 missing

BUTUAN CITY – A town councilor died after a pump boat capsized in the sea off the coast of Nonoc Island in Surigao City, at about 2 a.m., Sunday.

Police identified the fatality as Tubajon Municipal Councilor Florencia Binongo Alinsunod, 68, a resident of Malinao village, Tubajon, Dinagat Island Province.

Binongo’s body was found at the shore of Talisay village in Surigao City.

A passenger is missing, while eight others have been rescued, the police said.

Based on initial investigation, huge waves and strong winds caused the vessel to capsize while crossing Surigao strait. - GMANews.TV
