DOST: Brace for diseases if drought comes

Power interruptions and and high prices of pork and poultry may not be the only scourges brought by a drought, officials warned Friday. Science department Undersecretary Graciano Yumul Jr said the prolonged dry and hot spell can cause, among others, sore eyes, hypertension and dehydration. Iglesia ni Cristo-run dzEC radio reported Friday afternoon that Yumul also warned of the possibility of red tide in areas affected by the prolonged hot spell. These, he said, are aside from the spate of fires that have hit Metro Manila in past weeks. Earlier, senior state weather forecaster Ludy Alviar said the prolonged heat could be due to global warming. Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap added the change in weather that caused a prolonged dry spell may have been behind the disease that hit several hog farms in Bulacan this week. - GMANews.TV
