Arroyo extends Cimatu's ME tenure by 6 months

President Gloria Macagal Arroyo has extended by another six months the life of the Presidential Middle East Preparedness Committee headed by former Armed Forces chief of staff Roy Cimatu.

The President also gave an additional funding of P5 million for administrative and operational expenses of the committee under Executive Order 640 that Malacanang released on Wednesday.

The committee’s first extended term expired on June 30.

Justifying another extension until Dec. 31, 2007, Arroyo said “tensions, political instability and armed conflicts continue to exist in some countries of the Middle East that directly threaten the safety and security of thousands of Filipino workers in these countries."

“There is an urgent need for the PMEPC to continue to assess and monitor developments and update contingency measures to ensure the safety of Filipinos in the Middle East, prepare and establish a specific contingency plan each for the potential crises in some countries, and to uphold the current ban on the deployment of Filipino workers to Iraq and Lebanon," she said. - GMANews.TV
