Bacolod photojournalist dies after freak accident

Sun.Star: Photojournalist Jiovanni Espartero of Visayan Daily Headlines passed away at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City Sunday morning. He died of a head injury. Espatero figured in a freak accident along the national highway in Barangay Pahanocoy, Bacolod Friday night last week. He was driving a single motorcycle when the accident happened in front of the old Jaz Cola plant. Espartero was the one who exposed a Jaz bottle with a candy wrapper inside. If not for an accident, he is also set to expose another softdrink bottle with a dead lizard inside. This, as his text message sent to his editor Karl Ombion prior the accident also reads, “I have all the evidences and had convinced Danilo Casalda to surrender Jaz bottle. Coke bottle containing lizard to follow..." On the other hand, it can’t be determined until now what caused the accident since the bloody Espatero was only found the shoulder of the highway past 10 p.m. Friday. When checked, he only sustained a serious head injury near his left eye. And, according to the doctors at CLMMRH who attended to him, his injury might have been caused by a sharp object which hit him in the head after he was thrown from his motorcycle. Espartero however was also wearing helmet. Probers from Police Station 8 are also puzzled by the case. This, as according to some witnesses near the crash site, they were only shocked when they heard a loud bang and then saw a white-colored van that overtook the victim’s motorcyle. Later, they saw Espartero lying beside the highway. - Sun.Star
