‘Hanna’ leaves 9 dead


At least nine people died, including three children, and scores of families have been affected or evacuated due to tropical depression Hanna that wreaked havoc in the National Capital Region and several other areas. Eight of the fatalities were victims of landslides in Hingyon town in Ifugao, three of them were three-year-old Johani, five-year-old Megan, and seven-year-old Ruby, all surnamed Manwong. National Disaster Coordinating Council executive officer Glenn Rabonza said Sunday the landslide occurred at around 10 p.m. Saturday along a road in Upper Pitawan village in Hingyon, burying two houses. In a four-page report, Rabonza said the others who died in the landslide were identified as Erma Hiadan, 50, Julia Linglingon, 52, Hiadan Cupilyo, 80, Joel Linglingon, 27, and Henry Linglingon, 55. One Rommel Linglingon, 30, was reported missing and is subject of a search and rescue or retrieval operations by the Ifugao provincial disaster coordinating council, Rabonza also said in the report. Nine-year-old Denver Bogbog was injured in the same incident. He was taken to the Ifugao General Hospital. The 9th fatality was Richard Anonuevo, 25, whose body was recovered by the Philippine Marines Reaction Force in Bagong Silang, Payatas, Quezon City. Rabonza did not say what was the cause of Anonuevo’s death. In Misamis Oriental, at least 300 families or 1,200 persons from 16 villages in Balingasag town have been affected due to rains. The protection dike in Barangay Lingagao was also damaged. In Camiguin, two families trapped along the Dinanggasan River in Catarman were rescued by policemen. The NDCC also said that a drainage along a highway in Poblacion Catarman collapsed. In Sarangani, a chapel and a village hall, both estimated to be worth P500,000, was destroyed. Also, 29 houses were damaged along the coastal Sitio of San Nicolas in Barangay Lun Padidu in Malapatan town due to big waves. In Marikina City, 23 families or 136 persons have been evacuated to an elementary school. The families are said to be living near the Marikina River, which was about to overflow. In Sorsogon, at least 165 passengers have been reported stranded at the Pilar port; 20 passengers in Bulan Port, and 60 passengers in Matnog port when port operations have been suspended. The stranded passengers were able to reach their destination when ports’ normal operations resumed at around 5 p.m. Saturday. - GMANews.TV
