Panicked Vigan residents flee waves; 'Caloy' leaves RP

Residents living near the shoreline of Vigan, capital of Ilocos Sur province, briefly fled their homes after big waves caused by tropical storm Caloy rushed toward the coast.

Vigan officials said the waves reached some of the houses near the shores of the northern Luzon city, although nobody was reported injured.

Tropical storm "Caloy" (international name: Chanchu) has moved out of the Philippine area of responsibility and is heading towards the southern part of China but is still expected to bring rains to some parts of Luzon and the Visayas.

The storm made landfall on eastern Samar island late Thursday, sliced westward across the center of the archipelago and blew toward the South China Sea on Saturday, leaving continuing rain and bad weather in its wake.

The Office of the Civil Defense reported some 45 persons died from they typhoon, including 26 people who drowned when a ferry capsized in the Sibuyan Sea off Masbate.

In the province of Sorsogon, many of the fatalities were reportedly knocked down by uprooted trees.

Government reports said some 10,162 families or 53,307 people in 174 villages have lost their homes.

The typhoon reportedly destroyed more than 6,500 houses and caused P40.4 million in damage to agriculture.

It had 95 kilometer-per-hour winds near the center, with gustiness up to 120 kph.-GMANews.TV
