Many find 'Desperate' sorry for slur not enough

Not all Filipino viewers of the television show "Desperate Housewives" were satisfied with the apology of American Broadcasting Co. (ABC) for the racial slur on the Filipino medical community. In messages posted on the ABC network's message board for "Desperate Housewives" members who joined only in the last two days gave varied reactions to the apology. "A letter of apology is not enough. We should not tolerate this defamation of the Filipino medical practitioners. Are these Americans so superior that they can just go ahead and insult us? No way!" said VGrevel, a member who joined the message board on Oct. 4. VGrevel called for the filing of a $1-million class suit against the producers of the show and let the proceeds be given to the poor Americans who are being taken care of by Filipino medical doctors and nurses. "And lets see how these so-called brat producers of the show feel," VGrevel wrote. The viewer also called for blacklisting the producers from Philippine territory for life. "An apology is not enough, before they try to insult any other race further let's boycott the show!!" VGrevel said. "Hope the advertisers start pulling out and let the show die in their own hands - American hands!" Another viewer, desperate_housewives_racist, who joined the board Oct. 4, said ABC should put in the script of their upcoming DH shows on how they would correct their racist remarks. This way, ABC can "apologize not only to Filipinos but to their fellow Americans instead." "Does this mean racism is very much alive in the ABC work environment?? very disappointing. Teri Hatcher should have re evaluated the script as well before delivering the lines. Their apology is ok but i think the damage has already been done. Who in the world now would have faith in Filipino doctors? I think there are a lot of good Filipino doctors at par with Americans," he/she added. Humane007 similarly urged ABC to "apologize in public through your TV Station so that the 70 Million or so who watch the DH show and heard the disparaging remark against the Philippine professional plus other listeners will hear it." "This public apology on TV should hopefully end this....and producers will be more careful not to allow incidents like this to happen next time," he/she added. "Clearly the scriptwriters of the show are irresponsible and unaware that the American healthcare system will be crippled if not for the hundreds of capable, educated and well trained Filipino doctors, nurses, medical technologists and physical therapists currently working for the American public. This racial attack to the very core of the Filipino culture is unacceptable and the Filipinos are waiting for such an apology," wrote fili127. But other viewers accepted the apology. "That apology is enough for me. Now i can sleep in peace :)" said TFCTemplon. On the other hand, other watchers felt no apology was needed since the show was fictitious, with a fictitious character delivering the lines. Watcher daisy_ysiad2002, who joined the board Oct. 4, added that actress Teri Hatcher's character "has never been level headed." "If you can't grasp that her character is like this then don't watch the show. You should then also stop watching all the adult cartoons which are far worse than this," she added. Another watcher, herbolero, said it is time to stop the "unnecessary" nasty posts and "focus more on letting them know that we are capable of being the best in the medical field regardless of what some irresponsible script writer may think about it." But the exchanges sparked angry remarks from other watchers of the show who were registered on the message board. "I mean seriously people get over it already. Was it really the intention of the producers to bad-mouth Filipino doctors? They just used that country as an example because it's far away from America, and also because both cultures are very different. If anybody feels strongly about the issue, WRITE to ABC. Don't bore us DH fans. I mean this is a Desperate Housewives board!" said wom_wom, who joined the message board Sept. 26. "Just move on and stop trying to create this sad rebellion. You've all taken it way out of proportion," wom_wom added. Another viewer, smooth_criminal07, said it is time to "stop these arguments now and instead do our own businesses, our own jobs..and do them right." Other viewers called for a boycott of the show. "Let's just stop watching the show and prove that the comment was wrong. Stooping to the level of ignorance makes us less of what we really are. Apologies can be made and accepted but the harm has been done so what's the point? Let us move on," wrote Jomag07, a member since Oct. 3. Another viewer, katmikb, urged viewers offended by the slur to pull out all their stocks from Disney, which owns ABC. - GMANews.TV
