Arroyo goes 'malling' in Glorietta

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Tuesday inspected the devastation at Glorietta 2 and went shopping at the adjacent Glorietta malls in Makati City four days after a powerful blast hit the area and left 11 people dead and over 100 injured. Separate reports on radio dzBB and GMA News Flash Report said Mrs Arroyo, together with Social Welfare Secretary Esperanza Cabral and senior executives of mall owner Ayala Land Inc., walked through the boutiques and shops in Glorietta 1, 3 and 4. She then visited stores at the first and second floor of Glorietta 4 and bought shoes and a blouse. The President stood near a sign of the Glorietta 2 as she waved to customers at the mall activity center. Mrs Arroyo also bought coffee from a kiosk where she remarked that it was "business as usual." For his part, Ayala Land president Jim Ayala said that, "We are very happy that ma'am is with us here today (Tuesday) in order to demonstrate to our customers that our mall is indeed open for business." Mrs Arroyo was also seen being escorted through a door leading to the blast site near the Glorietta 2 lobby. GMA News Flash Report quoted Cabral as saying that Mrs Arroyo saw for herself how destructive last Friday's blast was. The DSWD chief said the President was both dismayed and saddened. The President reportedly left the mall after 30 minutes. - GMANews.TV
