The Philippine boxing team still hasn't won at the World Boxing Championships in Chicago, Illinois, with featherweight Charly Suarez bowing to Enkhzorig Zorigbaatar of Mongolia, 10-13, on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila).
"I gave it all but my opponent was very slippery," a teary-eyed Suarez said after the four-round bout, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP).
"Charly fought well despite being a first-timer in the worlds, but the Mongolian fought excellently," head coach Pat Gaspi said.
The 5-foot-9 Zorigbataar also a height advantage of three inches over Suarez.
The loss is the Philippines' third, after bantamweight Joan Tipon and light welterweight Delfin Boholst bowed in their bouts the day before.
The tournament, sanctioned by the International Boxing Association (Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur, or AIBA) and taking place at the University of Illinois-Chicago Pavilion, is a qualifier to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
The ABAP said, however, that the RP PLDT-Smart Boxing Team still has four in its seven-man lineup who have a shot at an Olympics slot.
Flyweight Violito Payla faces Andrew Selby of Wales on Thursday (Friday in Manila), followed by lightweight Genebert Basadre against Ognyan Kolev of Bulgaria and welterweight Wilfredo Lopez tests Velibor Vidic of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Veteran Harry Tañamor drew a bye in the light flyweight class and will meet Nasir Mohammed of Wales on October 28. - GMANews.TV
