Jinggoy: Arroyo recognized people's will

Senator Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada on Thursday expressed elation over the decision of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to grant executive clemency to his father, convicted former President Joseph Estrada. Interviewed from Geneva, Jinggoy said Mrs Arroyo recognized the "opinion of majority of the Filipino people" in extending the pardon. "I am very, very happy that President Arroyo granted clemency to President Joseph Estrada," Jinggoy said in Filipino. The senator said he was able to relay news about Estrada's pardon minutes before ending his speech at the Inter-Parliamentary Union attended by lawmakers from around the world. While he saying he was happy over the development, Jinggoy said he will remain with the political opposition. He added that for now, the elder Estrada has no plans of seeking the presidency or other elective posts. "I cannot describe in words how I feel. I am very happy ... And my father has forgiven all who betrayed him," he said. However, Jinggoy gave exception to Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis "Chavit" Singson, the deposed president's erstwhile buddy turned bitter political rival. "The one who exposed the 'wrongdoings' of President Estrada, he should just shut up," he said, adding that Singson should have won the senatorial race if people believed what he said. As this developed, the deposed president's wife Sen. Luisa "Loi" Estrada quoted her husband as telling her that, "Maybe I'll be home tomorrow." In San Juan City, meanwhile, radio dzBB reported that preparations started for a welcome for Estrada, with a stage, sound system and welcome posters and banners. City officials have planned a program in front of City Hall for Friday morning, with Estrada's son Mayor Joseph Victor "JV" Ejercito giving the welcome remarks. San Juan police director Supt. Rodelio Jocson said they are ready to provide security to Estrada and his "guests." "Like before, when headquarters orders us to get ready, we’ll augment security. One call from the Sandiganbayan sheriff and we’ll be ready to secure the former President," he said. - GMANews.TV
