CBCP urges transparency in Comelec appointments

The Catholic Church on Tuesday sought transparency in the selection of new officials for the Commission on Elections (Comelec). In a statement on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines Web site, CBCP President Angel Lagdameo called for a “wide consultation" in the selection process. Lagdameo said a transparent procedure and a wide consultation were necessary to restore the credibility of the Comelec, after some of its officials got involved in scandals. He issued the call after Comelec acting Chairman Resurreccion Borra told media that the Office of the President asked the poll body to comment on a list of seven nominees for the commission's vacant posts. Borra said the list contained the names of the following: Rene Saguisag, Rufus Rodriguez, Wigberto Tañada, Amado Valdez, Alioden Dalaig, Severo Maluenda, and Howard Calleja. There are currently two vacant Comelec seats — that of resigned chairman Benjamin Abalos and the post of the seventh commissioner. There will be two more vacancies after commissioners Borra and Florentino Tuason Jr retire in February next year. For its part, the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) called on President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to appoint “women and men of untarnished integrity and proven record of competence," at the Comelec. The PPCRV added it would come out with its own list of Comelec nominees, which would be submitted for President Arroyo’s consideration. - GMANews.TV
