Zamboanga City to mark Climaco's death

Sun.Star: ZAMBOANGA CITY - The local government has readied a program to commemorate the death of the late Mayor Cesar C. Climaco, dubbed as the legendary mayor of this city. Part of the program is the wreath-laying ceremony to be attended by some of the local government officials and Climaco's surviving relatives. Climaco was assassinated on November 14, 1984. Until now, the gunman and the mastermind of his assassination remain unidentified. He was inspecting a fire scene shortly before noon that day along Governor Alvarez Avenue when a lone gunman appeared and shot him in the head. Climaco used to inspect fire scenes to help determine who are affected and what assistance the local government could extend. He was buried at the Abong-Abong Park, his pet project, located in Barangay Pasonanca, which is overlooking the city. The park was later named as Mayor Climaco Freedom Park. Climaco, considered an unbeatable politician in local politics, served as mayor for several terms since the 60's. One of his sons, a lawyer, served as mayor during the Aquino regime. His younger brother, Jose, was once elected vice mayor. The only Climaco that remains in local politics is 1st district Congresswoman Ma. Isabelle Climaco, the daughter of Jose. She also served in congress and the council. She also used to be vice mayor. - Sun.Star
