BFAR testing Bicol, Surigao, Zamboanga and Samar bays for red tide

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Tuesday said it is looking into the possible red tide contamination of shellfish gathered from six coastal areas in Bicol, Surigao del Sur, Zamboanga and Samar. Radio dzBB reported that BFAR officials are currently testing water samples from the Milagros and Mandaon Bays in Masbate province; Sorsogon Bay in Sorsogon; Bislig Bay in Surigao del Sur; Dimaguilias Bay in Zamboanga; and Irong-Irong Bay in Catbalogan, Samar for the presence of red tide toxins that could harm consumers. BFAR said shellfish gathered from Cavite, Parañaque and nearby coastal areas south of Metro Manila are safe to eat, noting that tests have found no traces of red tide toxin in these waters. - GMANews.TV
