Ermita, Bunye rush back to Malacañang as PSG seals off Palace

Senior Malacañang officials to the Palace for an emergency Cabinet meeting, as presidential guards sealed off the Palace as of noon Thursday.

Radio dzBB reported that Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita and Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye rushed back to the Palace from the Senate where they attended a budget hearing.

The Senate was holding deliberations for the 2008 budget of the Office of the President and its attached agencies Thursday morning. Neither Ermita nor Bunye commented on the Makati City incident.

In Malacañang, presidential guards virtually sealed off the Palace and closed off Mendiola Bridge to vehicular traffic.

Meanwhile, Senators Manuel Villar Jr, Manuel Roxas II and Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III appealed for calm and called for following the rule of law. The senators said parties should avoid resorting to violence in resolving the situation.

For his part, Sen. Gregorio Honasan, another Philippine Military Academy graduate, said senators must concentrate on their work, which is to deliberate on the P1.227-trillion proposed budget for 2008.

Sen. Rodolfo Biazon, a former Armed Forces chief, adopted a wait-and-see situation, declining to comment for the moment. - GMANews.TV
