‘Examine conscience after Makati siege,’ Bacani tells Arroyo

Following last week’s standoff in Makati City, a Catholic bishop advised President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her administration officials to examine their consciences, instead of gloating over their “victory." Manila Bishop Teodoro Bacani Jr. said Tuesday that Mrs Arroyo and her officials should in particular check what they had done or failed to do that put the country in the sorry state it is in today. “Rather than gloat over their victory, those in power should examine their consciences. What have they done or failed to do to put our country in the sorry state it is in today?" Bacani, spiritual adviser of the El Shaddai spiritual group, said in his newspaper column in Manila Standard Today. He said they may be partly responsible for this happening especially since there is no transparency, honesty and integrity under their watch. In contrast, he said the country’s Asian neighbors like Singapore are prosperous partly because the ministers had not been charged or suspected of wrongdoing. “In the Philippines a center of truth is precisely what we lack. Indeed, here, the President and her husband, and top government officials have been suspected, weighed and found wanting by the people, if not by the courts yet. We, in fact, have a government we do not trust, because there is a lack of transparency, honesty, and adherence to the rule of law by those who are supposed to implement them," he said. - GMANews.TV
