RP still 4th in SEA Games; medal haul up to 89


Filipino athletes on Monday bagged three more bronze medals in the 24th Southeast Asian Games being held in Thailand, bring the country's total medal haul to 89. Although the new medals brought the country to third place in the race for medals, it was good only for the fourth place in the overall standing as Singapore had more golds. The latest victories came from Jul-omar Abdulhakim and Emraida Asmad, who snagged bronze medals in the Men's under 50-kg category and Women's under 55-kg category, respectively, of Pencak Silat. The third bronze was snagged by the Philippine's fencing team in the Women's Team Epée. Willy Wang earlier gave the country its 17th gold medal Monday when he ruled the Men's Nanquan (Three Events Combined) in Wushu competition. Wushu player Rene Catalan was awarded a bronze medal in the Men's under 52 kilograms category. Based on the result posted on the SEA Games website as of 13:57 (Thailand time), the Philippines is still in the fourth slot with 17 gold medals, 25 silver medals and 47 bronze medals. Singapore, ranking third, has a total of 62 medals - 26 golds, 20 silvers, and 16 bronze. Host country Thailand is still in the number one slot with 175 medals, 67 of which are gold. In the second place is Vietnam with 90 medals, with 31 golds. In the fifth place is Malaysia with 62 medals, 16 golds; followed by Indonesia with 61 medals, 14 golds; Myanmar with 28 medals, three golds; Laos PDR with 11 medals, two golds; Cambodia with eight medals, one gold; and Brunei Darussalam with a silver medal. - GMANews.TV
