Alcano bags gold in 8-ball pool, as RP drops to 6th overall
Former World Pool champion Ronato Alcano bagged the countryâs 31st gold medal in the 24th Southeast Asian Games on Wednesday for the Menâs 8-Ball Pool Singles. However, Alcanoâs gold medal failed to prevent the Philippinesâ slip to the sixth place overall, after being overtaken by Indonesia for the fifth place standing. Radio dzMM reported Tuesday afternoon that Alcano emerged victorious in the Men's 8-Ball Pool Singles finals held at the Sima Thani Hotel Grand Ballroom, bringing the countryâs medal haul to 133 â with 31 gold, 40 silver, and 62 bronze medals. Alcano's feat however did not prevent Indonesia from climbing higher in the medal standings, with 32 gold, 40 silver and 57 bronze medals. Still firm at first overall is country-host Thailand, which continued to add medals to its collection with 98 golds, 91, silver, and 78 bronze. Second and third spots in the overall rankings are Vietnam with 140 medals (51 gold) and Singapore with 100 medals (38 gold), respectively. Malaysia, who remains locked at the fourth position, has a total of 124 medals â 33 gold, 31 silver, 60 bronze. Alcano's medal is the country's third gold haul in billiards. Hopes of obtaining another gold medal in billiards remain alive as veteran Lee Van Corteza goes up against a Brunei opponent in the finals for another billiards division. Prior to Alcanoâs gold showing, the Philippine women's archery team on Wednesday also copped a gold medal in the Compound Women's team category. - GMANews.TV
