Fire hits UP dorm; no injuries reported

Fire believed caused by an electrical overload razed a "condemned" dormitory inside the University of the Philippines (UP) campus in Diliman, Quezon City before dawn Wednesday. Radio dzBB reported the fire at the Narra Residence Hall started at about 4:30 a.m. and reached the third alarm before firefighters placed it under control shortly before 5:30 a.m. No one was reported injured in the fire at the dormitory, located near the corner of Quirino Street and Katipunan Avenue inside the university campus. The fire occurred a day after the UP community started its celebration of the university's centennial. UP chancellor Sergio Cao, who rushed to the scene, told dzRH radio that no one was hurt in the fire, adding that campus security alerted police and fire officials upon learning of the fire. "Walang taong apektado dahil walang residente (No one was affected because there are no more residents in this dorm)," said Cao, who stayed at the dormitory during his student days at UP. "Pero ito ay dorm na maraming tumirang graduate. Ako mismo tumira dito. Maraming emotion kung malamang nasunog (But this is a dorm where so many students had stayed, including me. If they’ll hear of the news, there will be a lot of emotions)," he added. - GMANews.TV
