Rush-hour traffic along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Quezon City was snarled early Thursday morning after a dump truck crashed and spilled its cargo of sand on the road.
The driver of the truck sustained slight injuries, but the resulting traffic jam extended from the southbound part of the Cubao underpass to Quezon Avenue, more than one km away.
"May nag-cut na FX sa amin (An FX-type vehicle cut in front of us)," truck driver Jove Sunga, 28, told dzBB radio shortly after the accident, which occurred past 3 a.m.
Sunga said the sudden act forced him to swerve, but he lost control and the truck rammed a Metro Rail Transit (MRT) post before turning on its side and spilling its cargo of sand.
He said they were on their way from Pampanga province to Cavite when the accident occurred.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) sent two tow trucks to the area and closed off traffic at the Cubao underpass.
MMDA workers managed to clear the mess after 8 a.m., but traffic along the EDSA Cubao area remained heavy as the rush-hour period peaked.
Meanwhile, traffic between Manila and Makati City was also snarled early Thursday after a JAM Transit bus (DWU-266) figured in an accident near the corner of Osmeña Highway and Gil Puyat. - GMANews.TV
