Fire of still undetermined origin hit several houses inside a squatters' compound in Makati City and snarled traffic in the area Friday morning.
Chief Insp. Jose Embang Jr, the city's fire marshall, said the fire at Laperal Compound in Guadalupe Viejo in Makati City had reached Task Force Alpha at about 8:40 a.m. The compound is near the San Carlos Seminary.
"Mga dikit-dikit ito. Nagkakaproblema sa loob kasi makikitid ang daan (The houses are stacked close together. Our fire trucks are having problems getting through the streets)," Embang said in an interview on dzBB radio.
He advised incoming fire trucks not to enter the compound, but instead supply water to other fire trucks already in the area.
No one was initially reported injured in the fire, which devoured several houses made of
light materials.
Traffic along the Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) was snarled due to the fire.
Roberto Nacianceno, general manager of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) general manager, advised motorists from northern Metro Manila to avoid EDSA and take alternate routes.
"Nag-slow down din ang traffic dahil ang mga tao nanonood (Traffic slowed down because so many people were stopping to watch the fire)," he said. - GMANews.TV
