(Updated 4:30 p.m.) Two people were confirmed dead while three others were wounded in an explosion that rocked the dry dock of Korean shipbuilder inside the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) before noon on Friday.
GMA Flash Report said a leak in an acetylene tank being used in the dry dock caused the blast, which took place at about 11:15 a.m. at the Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd in the Redondo Peninsula, Brgy. Cawag in Subic.
Those injured who suffered burns were rushed to the hospital for treatment. They casualties are all employees of Hanjin, the report said.
Another report from the field said two people were killed, while four others were wounded in the accident.
The report said SBMA identified the fatalities as Mario Laxamana, 29, from Subic, Zambales and Jeremias Adamos, 30, Morong, Bataan.
It also said that three people were rushed to the St. Jude Hospital in Olongapo to get treatment for second degree burns. Another unidentified person was being treated on site, the report said.
Those rushed to the hospital are Jonathan Martinez and Gilbert Silva, both from Olongapo and Donard Elijah from Morong Bataan.
As this developed, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has ordered authorities to immediately come up with a complete investigative report in what she described as a mere "occupational accident," even as she expressed condolences to the families of the blast casualties.
"The President wishes to extend her condolences to the families of the 2 Filipino workers in Hanjin Industries in Subic Bay who died due to an occupational accident that happened at 11 a.m. President Arroyo has also given instructions to SBMA and PNP to submit a complete investigative report regarding this incident and to ensure that similar incident will not happen again. We are expecting the report soon," Bunye said.
"The President has also given instructions to SBMA, DSWD, DOH and OCD to make their own assessment in accordance to each agencies' mandate to extend their support when necessary particularly to those who were injured," he added.
