2008 gold and bronze medalists in NY fest

Episode on February 9, 2008 Saturday, 11:30 p.m. This Saturday’s Sine Totoo is a must-see. Find out why GMA’s Reporter’s Notebook won a Gold and Bronze world medal last week at the 2008 New York Festivals for two of its stories, making Reporter’s Notebook one of the most internationally awarded programs on Philippine television . Maki Pulido’s “Batang Kalakal" won the Gold World Medal at the New York Fest while Jun Veneracion’s “Engkuwentro" won the Bronze World Medal in separate categories of the broadcasting awards. “Batang Kalakal" tells the unforgettable story of 11-year old Liza Asnan. Despite an empty stomach, she wades through the murky, garbage strewn river everyday to scavenge for plastic and tin cans to sell at the junk shop. She is determined to continue going to school, though her classmates laugh at her because her shoes are filled with holes and her mother says they can no longer afford to send her next year. Sine Totoo host Howie Severino, also a New York Fest medalist this year, interviews Maki Pulido and gold-medal winning producer Joseph Laban. From them, find out how Liza’s sad story moved the hearts of viewers here and abroad, eventually turning the child’s life around. On the fateful day July 10, 2007, Jun Veneracion and his crew were caught in the midst of a seven-hour firefight between MILF rebels and the military in Basilan. Fourteen soldiers were killed - ten of them beheaded. “Engkuwentro" captures the heart-breaking moments when, at the peak of the battle, the Marines desperately struggled with mortar shells that failed to fire. This was the second time Jun Veneracion and his cameraman Julius Catibog were caught together in the midst of a crossfire. Find out straight from the two how journalists manage to cover such events in the face of such imminent danger. Do not miss the Reporter’s Notebook stories that were acclaimed the best among thousands around the globe – “Batang Kalakal" and “Engkuwentro" – this Saturday night, only on Sine Totoo.
