Cops warned vs joining EDSA rallies; church-backed noise barrage set Friday

The Philippine National Police warned its personnel Wednesday against joining rallies and protests marking the 22nd anniversary of EDSA-1, on pain of dismissal from the service. Radio dzBB reported that PNP spokesman Senior Supt. Nicanor Bartolome issued the warning even as Church-backed noise barrages were scheduled for Friday in Metro Manila. Bartolome said policemen caught attending the protests for the EDSA-1 anniversary will face administrative charges that may lead to dismissal. On the other hand, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines said a multi-sectoral group has organized and scheduled a noise barrage for Friday, Feb. 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. Sister Mary John Mananzan said the nationwide noise barrage hopes to drum up support for ZTE witness Rodolfo Noel Lozada Jr. "It's about time people in the government listen to a nation that has already awakened," Mananzan said in an interview posted on the CBCP Web site (www.cbcpnews.com). Dubbed as "Busina Para sa Katotohanan," the initiative hopes to mobilize students, housewives, motor vehicle owners transportation workers and Filipino families to use pots and pans, whistles and horns to show the people's support for Lozada. The Benedictine sister said other activities are being prepared to support Lozada, his family and other potential witnesses. "Reminiscent of the noise barrages during the martial law years, this year's activities will also feature posters and streamers calling on well-meaning Filipinos to support Lozada and encourage other officials who know anything of the NBN-ZTE deal to come out in the open," the CBCP said. - GMANews.TV
