Baguio cops seize slaughtered dogs from Pangasinan

TUBA, Benguet - "Dognappers" have changed their tactics. After being caught many times for transporting live dogs in cages, ring members have instead slaughtered captured dogs and singed their fur before bringing them up to Baguio. The local police led by SPO3 Eduardo Pamo of Police Community Precinct in Poyopoy, working on a tip, intercepted the carcasses of 28 dogs from a hired taxi early Tuesday morning. Police said the dogmeat came from Calasiao, Pangasinan. Two men were held in the case. Police said Jun Bugayong and driver Samuel Cuartero were being held for violation of the Animal Welfare Act of 1998. Pamo said that this was the first time that they found dogs already slaughtered and slightly burned. The confiscated carcasses were buried in Tuba, police said. In past cases, dogs were either muzzled or cramped in cages before the animals were sold to restaurants serving dogmeat here and in Baguio and La Trinidad. A member of an animal rights organization, who refused to be identified, claimed that the demand for dogs have risen because of some foreigners in Baguio and Benguet. He said these foreigners preferred to buy dogmeat and cook them rather than eat at dog restaurants. He said that some foreigners even make dog ham. - GMANews.TV
