MANILA, Philippines - Supporters of a congressman advocating snap elections reiterated Monday their call for such undertaking this May to resolve the present political crisis.
In a newspaper advertisement (Philippine Daily Inquirer), the "Citizen Power Movement" pushed for Nueva Ecija Rep. Eduardo Nonato Joson as its presidential bet.
"Sa political crisis ngayon, snap election ang sagot: legal, mapayapa at tamang pamamaraan (In this political crisis, snap election is the answer. It is legal, peaceful and the proper venue)," the group said in its advertisement.
The advertisement urged supporters of the snap election to call Joson's office at 9315520.
Joson, 57, is a member of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) party. He filed House Bill 3589 calling for a snap election.
In his bill, he sought a snap election on the fourth Monday of May, with the winner assuming the presidency from June 30, 2008 to June 30, 2010.
The winner shall not be eligible for reelection, the bill said.
Also, the bill provided P2 billion in funding for the snap poll.
The filing of the bill came at a time when the Arroyo administration is being hounded by allegations of corruption, the recent of which concerns the botched national broadband deal with China's ZTE Corp based on the revelations by Rodolfo Lozada Jr.
Lozada had implicated First Gentleman Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo and resigned Elections chair Benjamin Abalos to alleged irregularities on the scrapped deal. Both Mr Arroyo and Abalos have denied the allegations. - GMANews.TV
