JDV to relinquish post as Lakas president - report
MANILA, Philippines - Former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr on Monday morning said he will no longer be running as president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) and has instead recommended Speaker Prospero Nograles for the post. De Venecia, a Pangasinan congressman, bared this in a radio interview as the former House Speaker said he will be snubbing Monday's national directorate meeting of the Lakas-CMD. One of the biggest political parties in the country, the Lakas-CMD will be meeting Monday to discuss among others the creation of a committee that would facilitate its merger with Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (KMP), which is President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's party. "Boboycottin ko na itong meeting nitong Lakas-CMD nitong umaga. Hindi na ko kakandidatong presidente ng Lakas-CMD," said De Venecia, who was ousted early February through a Kampi-led campaign against him. "Si Speaker Nograles na ang nirekomenda ko at ni-rekomenda ni (former) President (Fidel) Ramos na papalit sa akin as president of Lakas-CMD," De Venecia added. He did not say whether he would accept an offer for him to take up the post as a Lakas-CMD president emeritus. He, however said that he would take on "another" role in the said ruling party. "Maski miyembro na lang ako, I will be the conscience of the party," De Venecia said. He added that he has decided to stand in as the party's "conscience," to preserve the integrity of the party that has already gained the respect of foreign diplomats the world over. "Lakas-CMD is the only party in the world that brings together Christians and Muslims under one roof, in a common political house. Nagugulat ang mga presidente, prime ministers sa North America, Europe, at Latin America kung paano natin nagawa," De Venecia said. He also said that he will prevent Lakas-CMD, which he co-founded with former President Fidel Ramos in 1992,, from becoming "a party of corruption, a party of lizards, or a party of snakes." De Venecia said he has already advised Nograles to take good care of their party, which the former said has already provided the model for a Christian and Muslim democracy. - GMANews.TV
