QC unveils experiment to ease traffic on Commonwealth Ave

MANILA, Philippines - The mayor of Quezon City on Wednesday unveiled a new experiment called the Discipline Zone or Sumunod sa Batas which is aimed at easing the traffic and imposing order on Commonwealth Ave., a major city thoroughfare. Under the SB zone program, the five-kilometer stretch of Commonwealth Avenue, from Philcoa to Litex area, will serve as a pilot “discipline zone" in Metro Manila, where laws and ordinances would be strictly implemented including jaywalking, anti-littering, no smoking and drinking in public, anti-squatting and anti-vending. Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr warned that motorists and vendors caught during the experiment will have to face the full force of the law. Belmonte issued the warning even as he admitted that the new program is the biggest and the most challenging experiment that the city and the police would undertake. “Apply the law to everybody or none at all. Motorists, pedestrians and vendors should follow the existing laws and ordinances such as no littering, no jaywalking, no vending and all traffic rules to avoid necessary penalty set by the law," Belmonte added. Belmonte stressed that if the program would succeed, it would be a great help to the city and its residents in terms of peace, order, security, safety, among others. The city mayor also warned that favoritism would not be entertained this time to ensure that the program will not fail. “Hindi dapat umiral ang favoritism o pagbibigay. Kasi kung may isang pinagbigyan ka tiyal na masusundan iyan at ito ang magiging simula ng pagbagsak ng programa," Belmonte added. Belmonte further stressed that it is about time that QC residents and its neighboring cities should be responsible for their action. - GMANews.TV
