Gay groups blast priest for anti-gay crack; patient in ‘rectum’ scandal seeks P6M damages

MANILA, Philippines - The groups advocating for the rights of gays and lesbians on Thursday blasted the spokesman of archdiocese of Cebu for passing the blame on the patient involved in a videotaped scandal of his rectal surgery. As this developed, the victim in 'rectum scandal' has sought P6 million in damages from the medical team and the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in the province. Sun.Star Cebu reported Friday that the patient has demanded P1 million in moral damages and P5 million in exemplary damages. He filed the supplemental affidavit to his complaint with the Office of the Ombudsman-Visayas on Thursday. In Manila, the pro-gay and lesbian groups Lagablab and Ladlad said the statement made by Msgr. Acilles Dakay show how society continues to discriminate the members of third sex. “Instead on focusing on passing the blame on gay sex, why don’t we give attention on the stigma and discrimination (on gays and lesbians) and come out with a solution," Jonas Bagas, Lagablab spokesman, said. “Off hand, maybe the church can ask the government and authorities to conduct mandatory human right education for health professionals," he added. Earlier, Msgr. Dakay stated that homosexuality is another issue in the rectal surgery scandal, aside from the misbehavior showed by doctors and nurses in the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Hospital in Cebu. “Homosexuality is second nature to some people. Perversion is unthinkable. What was just discussed (in public) was the misbehavior of doctors and nurses," Msgr. Dacay said. In a statement posted in Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website Msgr Dakay noted that the patient’s trouble started when he picked up a male prostitute who then stuck a body spray canister to his rectum during their sexual act. The patient said he was drunk and unaware of what had happened to him. The footage of the operation on his rectum, which showed the doctors and nurses poking fun at him, was uploaded in YouTube, an Internet video-sharing website. The victim said he would file a civil case against the VSMMH to serve as warning to other medical practitioners. Dr Jose Sabili, president of the Philippine Medical Association, had condemned the behavior of the doctors involved in the scandal and recommended to revocation of their licenses. - GMANews.TV
