CHED making changes to nursing curriculum to address low passing rate

MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) on Wednesday said it is making changes to the College of Nursing Curriculum as well as ensure a better passing rate for the Filipino nursing graduates.

CHED acting Chairman Romulo Neri changes are being made to adopt international standards in nursing education in the local curriculum. He noted that that CHED is working to implement it this coming school year.

"We will make changes in the curriculum for nursing to adopt to the international standards," Neri said.

Neri said it early, CHED's plan to introduce changes in the curriculum is already being met with criticism and objections from numerous nursing schools.

"There are still objections from the schools. The technical committee will meet with them on this," he said.

Neri did say what changes will be made to the existing curriculum, but sources said that CHED is using the results of recent nursing licensure exams as basis for the new curiculum and changes are likely to be seen in areas where most students failed or garnered low marks particularly English language and communications.

"They would want to work abroad, so a mastery of the English language is a must," the source said.

Filipinos remain the top source of labor for western countries due to their ability to communicate in the English language better that neighboring countries. However, the source said that we may lose such advantage.

"English is the basic lesson that will have to be improved in the curriculum of nursing and not just the science itself," the source said.

The source noted that while a growing number of students graduate from nursing schools, not even 50 percent pass the licensure exams.

The Professional Regulation Commission earlier announced that 28,924 out of 67,228 passed the nursing licensure exams given in December 2007 - or a 43.4% passing rate. - GMANews.TV
