Baguio dads want to improve pedestrian safety

BAGUIO CITY - Pedestrians in Baguio, particularly on Session Road, may soon get the respect they expect. Two city councilors proposed last week an ordinance penalizing drivers who would not stop for at least three seconds before passing through pedestrian crossings. "It has been observed that motorists do not anymore give respect to pedestrians who are already crossing the pedestrian lanes and they just pass through without due regard to the safety of crossing pedestrians," read the resolution filed by Councilors Fred Bagbagen and Elaine Sembrano. If the resolution is passed, drivers found violating the three-second stop would be penalized P1,000 plus confiscation of their license. Those caught more than once would be required to take a seminar on traffic courtesy, the resolution said. "I use crutches but drivers don't respect me. They speed up when they are near the pedestrian lane," deplored American but Baguio-born photojournalist Angel Villaralbo. Without the presence of police officers, citizens are taught to list down the license plate of erring and eager drivers. - GMANews.TV
