Storm Butchoy gathering strength, moves northward

MANILA, Philippines - Tropical storm "Butchoy" (Rammasun) continued to gather strength and is now moving northward, state weather forecasters said Thursday night. In its 11 p.m. advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said "Butchoy" was 500 km east of Hinatuan, Surigao Del Sur as of 10 p.m. Pagasa said "Butchoy" packed maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 100 kph, and was moving north at 11 kph. "Butchoy" was forecast to be 620 km northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao Del Sur by Friday evening; 700 km east of Borongan, Eastern Samar by Saturday evening; and 1,090 km east of Casiguran, Aurora by Sunday evening. While Pagasa did not raise any public storm signal warning, it said "Butchoy" will likely induce the southwest monsoon and bring rains over Visayas and Mindanao. "Residents in low-lying areas and living near mountain slopes over areas are advised to take all the necessary precautions against possible flashflood and landslides," Pagasa said. - GMANews.TV
