‘Cosme’ intensifies; 15 areas under Signal No 1


MANILA, Philippines - Fifteen areas in Luzon were placed under Storm Signal 1 as tropical storm "Cosme" (international codename: Halong) intensified slightly Friday afternoon. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the cyclone still threatens to dump rains and flash floods on Luzon and Western Visayas. "'Cosme' will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over Luzon and Western Visayas. Residents in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes are advised to take all the necessary precautions against possible flash floods and landslides," it said in its 5 p.m. advisory. It added residents along the coastal areas of Luzon and Western Visayas should be alert against big waves generated by "Cosme." As of 4 p.m., "Cosme" was estimated at 240 kilometers west southwest of Iba, Zambales, with maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph. "Cosme" was moving northeast at 9 kph and was expected to be 100 km southwest of Dagupan City Saturday afternoon; 70 km east of Aparri, Cagayan Sunday afternoon; and 590 km northeast of Basco, Batanes Monday afternoon. Under Storm Signal 1 are Bataan, Bulacan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Zambales, Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, Nueva Vizcaya, Ifugao, Benguet, Kalinga, Mt. Province, Abra, La Union, and Ilocos Sur. Northern and Central Luzon will experience rains and gusty winds and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. The western section of Southern Luzon will have monsoon rains while Western and Central Visayas and the rest of Luzon will have cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. Moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest will prevail over Southern Luzon and Visayas with moderate to rough seas. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate blowing from the southwest with slight to moderate seas except during thunderstorms. - GMANews.TV
