6 areas under storm signal 2 as ‘Cosme’ heads toward Luzon


MANILA, Philippines - At least six areas were placed under Storm Signal 2 and 21 more under Signal 1 as tropical storm "Cosme" (Halong) moved closer to Central and Northern Luzon Saturday. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that as of 4 a.m., "Cosme" was 160 kms west of Iba, Zambales. It packed maximum sustained winds of 95 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 120 kph, and was moving northeast at 15 kph. By Sunday morning "Cosme" is expected to be 220 kms north-northeast of Iba, Zambales or 100 kms North of Baguio City. On Monday morning it is forecast to be 400 kms northeast of Aparri, Cagayan. By Tuesday morning it is due 1,000 kms northeast of Aparri, Cagayan or 300 kms east-southeast of Okinawa, Japan. Placed under Storm Signal 2 were Zambales, Tarlac, Pangasinan, La Union, Benguet and Ilocos Sur. Under Signal 1 were Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mt. Province, Abra, Quirino, Quezon, Aurora , Ilocos Norte, Isabela, Cagayan, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Rizal, Lubang Island, and Metro Manila. "Cosme" will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over Southern Luzon and Western Visayas, Pagasa said. "Residents in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes are advised to take all the necessary precautions against possible flashfloods and landslides," it said. It added residents along the coastal areas of Luzon and Western Visayas are alerted against big waves generated by "Cosme." Pagasa said western sections of Luzon will experience stormy weather while the rest of Northern and Central Luzon will have rains and gusty winds and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. The rest of Luzon and Western Visayas will experience cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. The rest of the country will be having partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. Moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest will prevail over Visayas with moderate to rough seas. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate blowing from the southwest and south with slight to moderate seas except during thunderstorms. - GMANews.TV
