Prices of veggies increase after storm 'Cosme'

MANILA, Philippines - Prices of vegetables have increased after storm "Cosme" ripped through parts of northern Philippines, according to an official of the Department of Agriculture (DA). In an interview with radio dzBB on Saturday, Salvador Salacup, assistant secretary of the DA, said that based on monitoring last Friday, prices of "highland type" vegetables such as pechay, potato, and cabbage, increased by an average of P5. He said three days of strong rains caused by "Cosme" had affected the "harvesting and logistics system" at the Cordillera Administrative Region, one of the country's major producers of "cold-weather" vegetables. The DA official said only about 35 trucks from the the La Trinidad vegetable trading post in Benguet province reached Metro Manila. On normal weather conditions about 65 to 80 truckloads of vegetables from La Trinidad reach the metropolis, according to Salacup. He said vegetable production is being expanded in Region 4-A in Southern Tagalog to address food supply shortage during weather disturbances. A food caravan in the region would be launched on May 28, Salacup said. He said 60 percent of "highland and lowland vegetables" come from Central and Northern Luzon. Ten years ago, the regions supply 80 percent of vegetables to consumers nationwide, according to Salacup. - GMANews.TV
