Boos, pro-Lopez chants greet GSIS chief at Meralco

MANILA, Philippines - Boos and chants greeted Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) president Winston Garcia as he arrived at the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) compound in Pasig City for the annual Meralco stockholders' meeting Tuesday morning. Radio dzBB's Lito Laparan reported that Meralco employees, in uniform and wearing ID cards, heckled Garcia as he stepped out of his Land Cruiser at the Meralco compound before 8:30 a.m. "MML, MML!" they chanted, referring to the initials of Manolo M. Lopez, one of the patriarchs of the Lopez family. Meralco spokesman Elipidio Cuna tried to pacify the employees but could not stop them from heckling Garcia, the report said. The Association of Meralco Engineering Technicians also brought anti-Garcia and pro-Lopez placards to the site. The report said some 200 members heckled Garcia at the Meralco compound. "Garcia kahit ka manggulo patuloy kami sa tapat na serbisyo (Garcia, we will continue serving amid your efforts to disrupt us)," and "Kay Garcia wala kaming tiwala, kay Mr. Lopez may sampalataya (We don't trust Garcia, we have faith in Mr. Lopez)," and "We strongly believe and support the leadership of our chairman Manolo M. Lopez," read some of the placards. But Garcia appeared to ignore the heckling, even as Cuna went out to greet him and shake hands with him. Cuna told reporters there will be a press conference after the meeting. Meanwhile, militant public school teachers picketed the outside of the compound and gave Garcia a "failing grade" in handling the GSIS. On the other hand, militant groups such as the Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino and People's Movement Against Poverty picketed outside the Meralco compound and demanded a stop to the squabbling between Garcia and the Lopezes, and called for the lowering of power rates. - GMANews.TV
