MANILA, Philippines - Action star Rudy Fernandez succumbed to pancreatic cancer early Saturday morning, ending a battle that lasted several months. He was 56 years old. The actor died in his sleep after the cancer for almost two years. Fernandez died at 6:15 a.m., less than a month after he was brought home from a hospital. Fernandez had also undergone treatment abroad for his illness. A healing Mass attended by several friends at the Christ the King Church in Quezon City last May 10 was held for him. Security At the Heritage Memorial Park and Crematorium, security has been beefed up in anticipation of fans and celebrities who would flock to the wake of the actor. The crematorium will be closed off for awhile to keep the wake exclusive to relatives and close friends of the late actor. As of this posting, some of the actor's closest friends were already at the crematorium to condole with Lorna Tolentino, the actor's wife, who declined to be interviewed. Among those sighted with Tolentino were Senators Ramon Revilla Jr., Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada, Amy Austria, Gina Alajar, Tirso Cruz III, and Philip Salvador. Estrada was to make arrangements for the funeral and burial, said Fernandez's manager Lolit Solis. "Mabuti namatay siya sa pagtulog, talagang hirap na siya. Di niya kaya, di makatayo (It was better that he died in his sleep because his body was racked with pain)," Solis said. Solis said that as early as Tuesday night, Fernandez experienced extreme pain, but forbade his wife from calling an ambulance. The actor’s condition had worsened since he left the hospital. "Pagdating sa bahay, iba na. Di na nakakikilala, hinang hina na (When he was brought home, he was so weak such that he could not immediately recognize people)," Solis said. She said Fernandez could not stand people crying, adding, he even requested that son Mark Anthony Fernandez not be immediately allowed to enter his room because Mark wept when he first saw him.
