PNoy asks lawyers to spot liability of striking PALEA members

Are the employees of flag carrier Philippines Airlines who walked out of their posts liable for economic sabotage? That is what President Benigno Aquino III wants his legal team to answer. “Tinitingnan ng mga abugado ko kung gaano ka-clear (ma-consider ang strike bilang economic sabotage)," Aquino told Filipino journalists in Tokyo, Japan Tuesday night. He said what was clear to him is that disruption of airport services is punishable with imprisonment or fine under the Civil Aviation Authority Act of 2008. “Any person who disrupts the services of an airport is criminally liable under the Civil Aviation Authority Act of 2008 and may be penalized with imprisonment ranging from one year to three years or a fine of not less than 50,000 pesos but not exceeding 500,000 pesos or more as determined by the court," Aquino said. The actions of PAL personnel who refused to perform their tasks, such as manning check-in counters, those who refuse to check in passengers, and the ground crew who abandoned their posts may be considered as acts leading to the disruption of airport services at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2, the President said. At a press briefing in Malacañang Wednesday, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the conciliation meeting between the PAL management and leaders of the PAL Employees Association push through due to the opposition of one of the parties. But it was not clear to her which of the parties opposed the meeting that was supposed to be mediated by the Department of Labor and Employment. — VS, GMA News
