Cory Aquino ‘in pain,’ admits Kris

MANILA, Philippines - Former President Corazon Aquino is “in pain" as she continues her fight against stage 4 colon cancer, her daughter, television personality Kris Aquino, admitted on Sunday. Kris, speaking in “The Buzz," said she might not appear in her other television shows in the coming weeks because she wants to be with her mother “for whatever time left." “Ayokong magkaroon ng regrets na bakit ako pumasok sa trabaho [I don’t want to regret coming to work] when I could have been in the hospital," she said. Kris also thanked and appealed to the public for prayers so “the suffering would be lessened." “On behalf of the family, thank you to everybody na inuunawa kami, pinagdasal ang [aking] mom [for understanding us and praying for my mom]," she said. Meanwhile, in a text message, Kris thanked GMA News for its microsite calling her mother a global democracy icon. Mrs. Aquino, who was diagnosed with colon cancer last year, has been confined at the Makati Medical Center since June 25. Kris had earlier told GMA vice president for news programs Jessica Soho in an email that Mrs. Aquino’s body is too weak for chemotherapy. She sent the email to clarify reports that her mother had chosen to discontinue her chemotherapy. “Our Mom has never been a quitter, and her spirit is the strongest I’ve ever witnessed because of her deep faith in God," she said in the letter. Last week, Lourdes “Deedee" Siytangco, Mrs. Aquino’s former spokeswoman and a close family friend, said the former leader’s condition remains “stable." A series of novena Masses were held at the Greenbelt chapel in Makati City from July 1 to July 9 for her healing. Mrs. Aquino, the country’s first woman president, is the wife of the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., one of the staunchest critics of former President Ferdinand Marcos. She was installed to power in February 1986 following a civilian-backed military uprising. - GMANews.TV
