'Suspect in Ebarle slay was in 2004 car accident that killed a Palace exec'

The man suspected to have shot the son of a ranking Palace official during a traffic altercation last Wednesday had been involved in a car accident five years ago that resulted in the death of, incidentally, another Malacañang official. The Philippine National Police said in a statement issued Friday that Jason Ivler, the suspect in the shooting of the son of Undersecretary Renato Ebarle Sr., presidential chief of staff, figured in a fatal car accident in 2004 along the C5–Ortigas flyover that killed Undersecretary Nestor Ponce Jr. Ponce was then presidential assistant for resettlement in the Office of the President.

A family photo from the Honolulu Advertiser shows Jason Ivler, left, with his half brother Colby, mother Marlene, stepfather Steve, and half sister Maya.
According to a report by The Honolulu Advertiser, Ivler is an American citizen born in Massachusetts. The report said his mother is Marlene Aguilar, purportedly the sister of singer Freddie Aguilar. The PNP said Ivler was charged in court and a hold departure order was issued against him in 2004. Ivler was later arrested by National Bureau of Investigation and Immigration agents in Zamboanga City while he was about to sail for Malaysia. Ivler was reportedly out on bail when he purportedly shot 27-year-old Renato Ebarle Jr. along Boni Serrano Road in Quezon City last Wednesday night. Ebarle Jr. succumbed to death after sustaining three gunshot wounds. Major airports and seaports, as well as various PNP units in Metro Manila, have also been sent printouts of Ivler's photo. "We are confident that a major breakthrough in the investigation is forthcoming," Verzosa said, adding that Ivler’s movements are being closely monitored through the NCRPO’s network of CCTV cameras installed in strategic locations around Metro Manila. It was also learned that there are no firearms registered under Jason Ivler's name based on records of the PNP Firearms and Explosives Division. Ivler's stepfather Stephen Pollard, an executive of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has vowed to help QCPD police in locating the suspect. Pollard is the registered owner of the Honda RV with diplomatic license plate 20903 that Ivler was riding in when he shot Ebarle Jr. [See: Vehicle in Palace exec son slay traced to British national] Ann Quon, principal director of the ADB's external relations department, called the shooting "a serious and tragic incident." "Given that the matter is currently under police investigation, ADB is unable to make any comment on the issue," she said. "Based on the information available so far, we do not believe that ADB staff was involved in the incident." - Johanna Camille Sisante, GMANews.TV
