Police kill 2 in Quezon shootout with truck hijackers

Two men who commandeered a truck loaded with sugar were killed in an encounter with policemen in Quezon province on Wednesday. Chief Superintendent Leonardo Espina, spokesman of the Philippine National Police, said the suspects took control of the 10-wheel truck (plate number WBX 799) while it was en route to Lucena City at about 7 a.m. Two hours later, the stolen truck was spotted plying the diversion road in Tiaong town in Quezon. When police flagged down the truck, it sped towards the national road, prompting authorities to pursue the suspects. A gunbattle ensued, resulting in the death of the two suspects, while the driver and the truck helper were rescued. In a separate incident, another 10-wheeler, this time carrying noodles, was hijacked on Wednesday morning. The motorcycle-riding suspects posed as policemen and flagged down the truck in Manila's Dimasalang area.
