Alcantara, teammate exit French Open jr tourney

After Jeson Patrombon’s elimination, it was Francis Casey Alcantara and teammate Filipino-American Raymond Sarmiento’s turn to be shown the exit door in the 2010 French Open Juniors Championship. Alcantara and Sarmiento failed to keep up against Carlos Bolada-Purkiss of Spain and Alessandro Colella of Italy dropping a 7-6 (4), 6-3 straight sets defeat in the second round of the boys’ doubles event at the Roland Garros Stadium in Paris, France. Bolada-Purkiss and Colella will next face the second-seeded pair of Peter Heller and Kevin Krawietz of Germany in the quarterfinals with the winner earning a semifinals berth. Alcantara’s loss in the boys’ doubles ended the Philippines’ campaign in the Grade A event. Another Filipino bet, Jeson Patrombon, campaigned in the boys’ singles and also suffered a second round exit when he lost to Duilio Beretta of Peru, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 2-6. This is the second partnership of Alcantara and Sarmiento after their doubles’ victory in the Mitsubishi Lancer International Tennis Championships in Manila. Alcantara is still in the hunt for his second Grand Slam title after his team up with Chinese-Taipei’s Hsieh Cheng-peng resulted to an Australian Open Junior doubles crown last year. Alcantara and Sarmiento earned a spot in the second round after a 6-4, 0-6, 10-4 win over Slovak Republic’s Filip Horansky and Jozef Kovalik. Patrombon, meanwhile, is expected to play in the 1st Singapore Youth Olympic Games if the 17-year-old netter makes the grade in the August 14 to 26 event. The top 30 junior netters are reportedly entered in the main draw. Patrombon still has an outside chance of earning a spot in the Youth Olympiad after the International Tennis Federation (ITF) releases its updated rankings. Patrombon is currently ranked 43rd in the world. Patrombon's last tournament on clay will be the German Open, which is another Grade I event. He then shifts on grass to prepare for the Junior Wimbledon later this month. – JVP, GMANews.TV
