The fireman who was shot dead last week after refusing to give his motorcycle to an armed man trying to escape from authorities was given a posthumous award by the Department of Inteior and Local Government (DILG). The Medalya ng Kadakilaan was presented to Fire Officer 3 Armando Bose's wife, Jhona Bose, during the fireman's wake at Barangay Gulod in Novaliches, Quezon City on Friday. “His act of self-sacrifice has depicted the true picture of a real firefighter which is truly admirable and worthy of praise and emulation," said Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo. Aside from the award, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), an attached agency of the DILG, also handed out a Special Financial Assistance to Boses' family worth P169,000, equivalent to his six months salary. Bose's family will also receive other benefits from the BFP Mutual Benefits Association Inc. The late fireman's hospital expenses were shouldered by the Makati City government. Bose is survived by his wife and two children. The 54-year-old fireman was already contemplating on retiring after serving in the BFP for the last 24 years, according to the DILG. Robredo and Interior Undersecretary Rico Puno both visited Bose's wake to express their condolences to his family and praise him for his "deed of bravery and heroism beyond the call of duty." Bose, aboard his motorcycle, was on his way to work at the BFP command post near the West Tower Condominium when an armed suspect allegedly stopped him along Evangelista Street at Barangay Bangkal and tried to steal his motorcycle. Bose resisted and was reportedly shot by the assailant on his head and left arm. A pedicab driver in the area also died after being shot by the still unidentified man, who was wielding a sub-machine gun and a revolver. Before the shooting, authorities were trying to apprehend the suspect, who was reportedly roaming near an excavation site for a gas leak, because he apparently looked suspicious. During a subsequent police chase, a grenade fell off from the man's bag. – VVP, GMANews.TV
