Driver killed in police-'carjackers' shootout in CLuzon

A driver of a councilor was killed as he was caught in a crossfire in a shootout between police elements and armed robbers who took the victim along with his employer's car in Pampanga province Tuesday. Radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported the men took the driver along with the Honda Civic (USX-494) of Angat town (Bulacan) councilor Erwin Illescas. But Illescas declined to talk about the incident, saying he wants the investigation to take its course first. Police earlier said one man was shot dead in a running gun battle in Pampanga. Central Luzon police director Chief Superintendent Allan Purisima said the chase started in neighboring Bulacan province and ended near a public market in Sta. Ana, Pampanga. "Yung report nanggaling ito sa Bulacan, tinawag sa radyo. Ang sabi, ninakaw ang sasakyang ito (The report we got was that the chase started in Bulacan, and Bulacan police relayed the information to their Pampanga counterparts. The report indicated the vehicle was stolen)," he said in an interview on dzBB radio. He said a search is ongoing for the suspects, who police believe ran toward the nearby public market. The dzBB report said traffic was snarled in the area before noon as the Honda Civic was not immediately removed from the scene of the incident. Purisima cited an initial information showing the chase started in Bulacan's Hagonoy town, with police setting up a dragnet that extended to Pampanga province. The suspects reportedly fired on the lawmen in Sta. Ana town, prompting police to fire back. Police have been cracking down on carjacking gangs since the carjack-murders of Venson Evangelista and Emerson Lozano and Lozano's driver Ernani Sencil earlier this month. — LBG/RSJ, GMANews.TV
