5 suspected carjackers fall; stolen vehicles recovered in QC

One week after shaking up their anti-carjacking efforts, police in Quezon City announced Monday the arrest of at least five suspected carjackers. Radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported the five were arrested in a series of operations in different parts of the city. But it was not immediately clear if the five were members of the same gang, or belonged to different carjacking gangs. Police also recovered five suspected stolen motorcycles and two taxicabs as well as 22 side mirrors during the operations, the report said. Only last week, the Quezon City police shook up its anti-carjacking unit after three carjacking incidents in three days. It dismantled its Anti-Carnapping Unit (ANCAR) and replaced it with the District Anti-Carnapping Unit (DACU). The shakeup came after the third carjacking in the city three days last Wednesday, when armed men seized a Mitsubishi Montero (PIH-155) in a residential area. On February 7, unidentified men blocked the path of a Mitsubishi Strada pickup in Baesa village in Quezon City, and made off with the vehicle and two of its passengers aged 9 and 16. The next night, unidentified men made off with a silver Mitsubishi Adventure (RJD-147) parked in Bahay Toro village. Ricardo Torres, the owner of the Adventure, said he parked the vehicle at 7 p.m. and later found out it was missing. — RSJ, GMA News
