PNoy attends wake of slain Calbayog mayor

President Benigno Aquino III has assured the family of slain Calbayog City Mayor Reynaldo Uy that he will do everything in his power to give them justice. A statement posted on the Presidential Communications Operations Office website said Aquino visited the wake of Uy at the city's sports complex on Thursday morning. It said the President condoled and talked with Uy's widow and four children for around 15 minutes, during which they gave him a letter stating their "concerns." "He (Aquino) took his time to read the letter. We have high hopes that we will get justice (for the death of my father)," Rosa Jessica Uy, the slain mayor's eldest daughter, said in the statement. Uy, 59, was shot by an unidentified gunman while attending a town fiesta in Hinabangan, Samar last April 30 at around 9:30 p.m. He died while undergoing treatment at the St. Paul's Hospital in Tacloban City the next day. Uy was a member of Aquino's Liberal Party. Eunice Babalcon, a provincial board member who was injured during the incident, said Aquino's visit already made them "happy." "We are very happy. This is very rare for the President to come here," she reportedly said. Earlier, Aquino said Uy's murder could be politically motivated since there will be a recall election in the province. The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) then issued a statement that it will be offering a P200,000 reward for the identity of Uy's killer and a P1-million reward for the arrest of the same. Uy's family, however, did not comment on the investigation nor on the possible relief of some police officials in the province. But the Palace statement quoted the slain mayor's daughter Jessica as saying that they will "continue the fight" of her late father. Yellow posters with the inscription “Justice for Ining Uy" and yellow buntings were reportedly displayed all over the city and inside the sports complex where the mayor’s remains were brought.
