Help sought for Maguindanao flood victims

A group of Muslim law students from different universities in Metro Manila on Wednesday asked for help from the Muslim community for the victims of floods in Maguindanao province.

"We, the Muslim youth in the Philippines, appeal to the Muslim world to extend immediate relief operations or any possible help to ease the sufferings of their brothers in Muslim Mindanao," the Alliance of Muslim Advocates of Law (AMAL) said in a statement on Wednesday. Maguindanao was placed under a state of calamity after several of its towns were flooded due to continuous downpour. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that at least 10,083 families in Maguindanao were affected by the floods. AMAL, however, said that help is not arriving fast enough. "Evacuees are suffering from lack of clean water, food and medical supplies. Support cannot be delayed further especially with the Holy Month of Ramadan is one and half month away," it said. Ramadan is the the Islamic month of fasting. Last Sunday, AMAL launched Oplan: Bigay-Tulong “Panabang sa Maguindanao" (Aid to Maguindanao), a project wherein volunteers are expected to visit Muslim communities in Metro Manila from June 23 to 30 to appeal and collect used clothing, blankets, noodles, canned goods, and other materials that may be of help affected residents. The project is being conducted in coordination with other youth organizations, including the Students Association for Islamic Affairs (University Belt Muslim students group), Integrated Muslim Students Association in the Philippines (IMUSTAPHIL), University of the Philippines Muslim Students’ Association (UP MSA), Muslim Scholars of Law Society (MuSLawS) based in MLQU Law School, and Philippines Muslim Action Network (PhilMAN).
