Aquino back from ASEAN Summit in Bali

President Benigno Aquino III arrived home Saturday night from his participation in the 19th ASEAN Summit in Bali, Indonesia. Aquino arrived aboard a Bombardier aircraft from Bali shortly before 10 p.m. at the Villamor Air Base, government-run dzRB radio reported. Vice President Jejomar Binay led officials in welcoming Aquino. Other officials who welcomed Aquino included Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr., PNP chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, Health Secretary Enrique Ona, and Social Secretary Corazon Soliman. The dzBB report said Aquino appeared in high spirits upon his arrival. While in Bali, Aquino urged ASEAN to promote the welfare of migrant workers and consolidate support for a rules-based, regional solution to competing claims on the South China Sea. Aquino also joined his counterparts in giving the rotating chairmanship of ASEAN to Myanmar—a move supported by the United States through US President Barack Obama. Also while at the ASEAN Summit, Aquino was continually updated on developments in Manila involving former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, whom police arrested on Friday on electoral sabotage charges filed by the Commission on Elections and Department of Justice. — ELR, GMA News
